Clay County Man Arrested for Animal Cruelty After Severely Neglected Dog Found Chained Without Water

On 07/06/26 at 10:40 AM, Clay County Officer Bronson Kirby responded to 631 Bethabara Road in Hayesville after an anonymous call had been received about a dog that was being mistreated. Officer Kirby was met by Jacob Lloyd Henderson, 23 years of age, who resided at this residence. When told about this anonymous report, Henderson directed Officer Kirby to an old plastic doghouse.

Officer Kirby found a medium sized black and white dog confined by a chain, without water, and severely malnourished. Officer Kirby photographed and made notes as to the dog’s condition. A few hours later, Officer Kirby and Clay County Sgt Will Suggs returned to the residence, seized the dog, and transported it to Big Bear Veterinary Clinic in Hayesville. Henderson signed custody of the dog over to Big Bear Veterinary Clinic where Dr. Lawlor provided treatment which saved its life.

Based on information provided by Dr Lawlor, the condition of the dog was a result of abuse and neglect over a period of four to six months. On 07/15/26 Clay County Officers Nate Rogers and Sean Stout arrested Henderson for the crime of Cruelty to an Animal. He was issued a $500 bond for his release.

All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
